Sutton Storm U14 team made an excellent start to the season with a double-header, a game against Kingston Wildcats SOB followed by Surrey Rams’ 1st team. Both games were very fast paced and just watching all the action on the court could leave one feeling exhausted.
The match against Kingston Wildcats SOB started off with a few early baskets on both sides but Sutton Storm gained advantage early on and the whole team worked very hard to maintain this throughout the match. While everyone contributed to the final result, most points were scored by Aidan Akonnor (17) and Ben Browne (8). The end result was Sutton 52 : Kingston 38.
About half an hour later, came a tip-off against Surrey Rams. They were very quick to score and took the lead in the first quarter which they managed to maintain for most of the match. In the 3rd quarter, we equalized 37 : 37 and half-way through the 4th quarter, Sutton Storm were leading with 44 points. Surrey Rams were determined to catch up again and with a couple of baskets and a few free throws they equalized 44 : 44 in the last few seconds. A one-minute overtime did not change the score and it went into free throws.
After a flip of a coin, Surrey Rams went first and missed. The tension in the air was nearly palpable. The first free throw for Sutton Storm was taken by Reece Palmer who scored and sealed Sutton’s victory 45 : 44.
Apart from the final free throw, Reece scored 12 points earlier in the game, while Nathan Butler-Kowlessar and Ben Browne scored 6 points each.
Well done to everyone on the team, they all played brilliantly!
